mplayer is well known to be the swiss army of Linux Media Player. Leaving the issues the library that it use to lay is GPL/LGPL or not. It;s the best media player so far as i concern. (Heck where else can you find a media player that let you -dumpaudio/-dumpmovie so easily?) However unlike most of the minority (most newbies to linux fear the command line ) thus born the front-end for mplayer (call gmplayer = gtk front-end + mplayer)
But i have to admit it's terribly ugly by default. Even with good themes why the heck the video layer is and the control bar is splited in the first place? So thus somebody does a good job making a gnome-mplayer ( An mplayer front-end that gives similliar interface to Media Player Classic". It's simple , easy to use and nice.
What makes this software good is it used a rich API that is exposed via DBUS.
